Durban Project

A 3-year residential build that pushed every part of our process — design, programming, commissioning and ongoing optimisation. The mandate was simple in spirit and complex in execution: take an enormous lighting estate and make it feel effortless to operate.

Highlights:

• 380+ lighting circuits unified under a single Crestron control platform
• Approx. 1,600 light fittings mapped, scened and tuned per room
• Electrical drawings, marked-up layouts, DALI driver records, ballast settings and switch schedules coordinated across multiple project stages
• Whole-home audio, video distribution and climate control integrated into the same touchpoint
• Custom UI tailored for the family’s daily routines, with optimised scenes for entertaining, sleep, cinema and away modes

For a home at this scale, the real work is not only connecting equipment. It is designing the control logic so a complex property becomes simple to live in. Each room needed lighting scenes that matched the architecture, the finishes and the way the family used the space, while still allowing the technical systems to be supported properly after handover.

This is the kind of project that shapes how DG Technologies approaches home automation installation in Durban and KZN. The earlier the planning starts, the better the final result: lighting circuits, keypad positions, touch panels, speaker routes, network infrastructure, equipment racks and service access all need to be considered before the home is finished.

Behind the finished rooms was a large amount of technical administration: floor plans, revised electrical layouts, room-by-room keypad schedules, DALI driver documentation, ballast settings, supplier coordination, network checks and ongoing commissioning notes. That background work is not always visible in the final photographs, but it is what makes a large automation project supportable.

The result was a large residential system where hundreds of circuits and thousands of fittings could be controlled through a calm, practical user experience. Instead of asking the client to manage the complexity, the automation system carries that complexity in the background.

Projects like this are also why we focus on professional platforms, careful documentation and long-term support. A premium home automation system has to look refined on day one, but it also has to remain understandable for maintenance, upgrades and future changes years later.
